Custos
The Newsletter of the NPM Chant Section

NPM's newest section, the Chant Section, was begun in 2005. The purpose of the Chant Section is to promote Latin Gregorian Chant and vernacular chant based upon it (understood broadly). The Section hopes to encourage the appropriate use of chant in the reformed liturgy. The Chant Section chair is Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB, a monk of Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.

This is the first edition of our online newsletter, "Custos" (pronounced KOO-stos). The name of our newsletter comes from the little note at the end of the line in traditional four-line notation which helpfully indicates what the first pitch on the next line will be. This little note is called a "custos," which is Latin for "guide." We hope that our newsletter will be a helpful guide to the work of the Chant Section, and also a helpful forum to learn more about chant.

The newsletter will most likely appear once or twice a year, as seems appropriate. Members of the Chant Section are invited to submit materials for the newsletter to its editor, Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB, at awruff@csbsju.edu.
