| We are a gathering of African
American NPM members and pastoral musicians serving African American
parishes. This special interest section was formed to foster the
art of musical liturgy in African American worshiping communities,
and to provide a way for the musical gifts of the African American
community to be shared with NPM members and the larger Catholic
community.
The presence and contribution of African American
pastoral musicians has been a major component of past NPM conventions,
including major addresses by Msgr. Ray East, Fr. Clarence
Joseph Rufus Rivers, Rawn Harbor, Grayson Warren Brown, and
Sr. Teresita Weind, SNDdeN.
NPM
conventions offer pastoral musicians, clergy and other
leaders of worship opportunities to sing and pray together, develop
musical skills, deepen liturgical knowledge, and discover new music
for their parishes.
The NPM Standing Committee for African American
Musicians makes proposals and suggestions for workshops and events
at NPM conventions and for other educational programs. The Chair
of the Standing Committee is a voting member of the NPM
Council, and represents the interests of African American
musicians as council members reflect together on the future of the
Association. Please contact us if you have suggestions or ideas
that you would like to share.
Be sure to gather with us for the NPM
2005 National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There
will be a meeting
of the NPM Section for African American Musicians on
Monday, June 27, 2005 at 4:00 PM.
I hope to see you there!
