The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is a celebration of divine love expressed in the incarnate person of Jesus. That divine love in human form is a call to each of us to be touched and transformed by this love. Devotion to the Sacred Heat developed in the Middle Ages and became so strong that it evoked several papal encyclicals in support and explanation of this devotion. Beginning as a special devotion in a French seminary, a liturgical celebration of the Sacred Heart spread in the eighteenth century through France and other European nations, and it became a feast in the universal calendar in 1856.
Ezekiel 34:11–16. Evoking imagery from Psalm 23 and the promise of an ideal shepherd-king, the prophet presents God as the one who will replace the wicked shepherds and will rule the people directly, bringing them together from exile and leading them to good pasture.
