PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD'S PASSION C Lectionary #37C, 38C

The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and his death five days later have cosmic consequences. People beyond the limits of the covenant recognize him, and even the stones cry out.

Palm Procession Gospel: Luke 19:28-40. Judging by the response that the two disciples were ordered to give, Luke suspects that the colt belonged to someone who knew Jesus. The crowd's acclamation is made more general, for Luke's non-Jewish audience, and Jesus is hailed as the “ruler who comes in the name of the Lord.” Jesus' comment to the Pharisees indicates the cosmic nature of what is happening.

At the Mass

It is strongly recommended that all four Scripture texts (including the psalm) be used at Mass. However, given the importance of the Passion narrative, the priest is authorized to choose only one of the other two readings prescribed, plus Psalm 22. If necessary, only the Passion may be read.

Isaiah 50:4-7. The third “song of the servant” describes the servant's mission as speaking a rousing word—a mission to be carried out despite rejection and suffering. The servant remains faithful to the mission because of God's help.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (21) 22

An individual lament, whose opening line is put on Jesus' lips in Matthew's and Mark's accounts of the Passion. Despite current sufferings, the psalmist relies on the memory of God's past mercies to hope for relief. This hope leads to an invitation to all who hear the psalmist to join in the praise of God.

Palm Sunday Psalm (Hughes) CCS 2329

Philippians 2:6-11. The “kenosis” or “emptying” hymn. This hymn text, modified somewhat by Paul, may have been sung in early Christian liturgies. Christ's obedience to the Father's will, even to the point of death, “even death on a cross” Paul adds, is the reason for his exaltation.

Luke 22:14–23:56. Luke's narrative is a summary of his teaching throughout the Gospel. The lowly will be exalted; fidelity to God's will is what matters; don't trust the powerful and authorities in this world; the death of Jesus has consequences beyond the people of the covenant—in fact, it has cosmic consequences. Note the rubric that the readers pause after they recount the death of Jesus, and all kneel for a short time.

Note: The Passion is normally proclaimed by three voices. GIA has a musical setting of this text. In whatever form you proclaim the Passion today, please do not give the “crowd” lines to the congregation; this is inappropriate.
