DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN LATERAN Lectionary #671
The ancient Lateran basilica commemorates the first public site of the “mother church” of Roman Christianity—a large meeting hall on the Lateran Hill donated by the Emperor Constantine. It was dedicated in 324 under the title “Church of Our Savior.” Later, the ancient building was replaced by a new church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, popularly known as St. John Lateran. This is the pope's church in his role as bishop of the city and province of Rome.

Entrance Rite
Because today's celebration focuses so strongly on the gathering of God's people to form the Church, the liturgy might appropriately begin with the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling of Holy Water, which recalls our common baptism. If this rite is used, consider using a song which relates to the themes of church and baptism, such as "Church of God" (Daly) or "Out of Darkness" (Walker).

Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12. The restored Temple is the source of life-giving water.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (45) 46
This is the first of a set of hymns called “Zion hymns” sung in praise of the Temple. God is presented as doing battle with the forces of chaos, represented by the churning sea. God's victory turns the sea into a peaceful river. Note: Because the texts for this feast are relatively new in the Lectionary for Mass, there are very few settings of this psalm with its proper antiphon readily available.

Or Common Responsorial Psalm

Ps (83) 84:  How Lovely Is Your Dwelling Place
Ps (121) 122:   I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say

Because there are not many settings of Psalm 46 available in the standard hymnals, you may want to substitute Psalm 84 or 122, which are more available. Since today's feast falls during the last weeks of Ordinary Time, when the liturgy turns to themes of Christ's second coming, Psalm 122 would be a very appropriate choice.

1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17. As he will use the analogy of the body later in this letter to describe relationships within the church, so here Paul uses the analogy of a building to describe how God, working through Paul, built up the church in Corinth.

John 2:13-22. Jesus purifies the Temple.
