SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER C Lectionary #61
NOTE: In some places, the Ascension is celebrated on this Sunday, and the assigned texts for the Seventh Sunday of Easter are not used. The readings for this Sunday focus on the notion of witness: its cost, its challenge, and its reward.

Acts 7:55-60. Stephen may have been one of those Gentile converts to Judaism who then became a Christian. This group became the focus of discussion at the Council of Jerusalem. Arrested for teaching heresy, he was stoned to death--the punishment that the Torah required. Even as he was dying, he practiced the mercy and forgiveness that Jesus taught and practiced.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (96) 97
This enthronement hymn, praising YHWH as king of the nation, also hails the God of Israel as “Most High over all the earth.”

Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20. The conclusion of the Book of Revelation looks to the return of Christ, who will bring blessing to those “who wash their robes”—the martyrs. United with the Spirit, the Church sings “Come, Lord Jesus.”

John 17:20-26. In the prayer for unity from the Last Supper discourse, Jesus prays that his disciples might have the unity shared by the Father and the Son, because they already share in the “glory” that Jesus has received from the Father.
