SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C Lectionary #78

The “morality of the two ways” is an ancient model for teaching proper behavior. There is a right way and a wrong way; a way that leads to life and a way that leads to death. That dual morality is presented in three different ways in today's readings.

Jeremiah 17:5-8. Writing for people in exile, the prophet summarizes the importance of fidelity to the Torah: Cursed are those who trust in human institutions; blessed are those who trust in the Lord.

Psalm of the Day: Ps 1

Psalm 1 opens the Book of Psalms with a teaching on basic faith-based morality: Those who delight in the law of the Lord are like trees planted by the water; the wicked are like dry chaff blown away on the wind.

Suggested Common Psalm

Psalm 27: The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation

Psalm 63: My Soul Is Thirsting

1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20. After summarizing his preaching about Christ (see previous Sunday), Paul comments on the Christian insight into human life: It does not end in death but is open, to those with faith, to a share in the resurrection.

Luke 6:17, 20-26. Luke's version of the Beatitudes includes blessings as well as woes—a variation on the morality of the two ways. Those whom people despise are, in fact, blessed, while those who seem to have everything are facing disaster.
