SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER C Lectionary #57
Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the church seeks to live in love and share the gift of peace, Jesus' final gift to us.

Acts 15:1-2, 22-29. The first great crisis that the church had to face was how to deal with Gentile converts. Paul and Barnabas had gone beyond what other apostles were doing by preaching to Gentiles who had embraced the Jewish faith and even to those who had not become Jews. One faction of the church insisted that all who believed in Jesus also had to follow Jewish practice and the Torah. The issue was addressed at the “Council of Jerusalem,” the first major meeting of church leaders to deal with a problem. They sought to act under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (66) 67
This psalm was probably composed as a thanksgiving for a good harvest. It may have been sung at the feast of Tabernacles. It is used here because of its invitation to the nations to join in praising God.

Let All the Earth Cry Out with Joy

Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23. The vision of the New Jerusalem links the Jewish heritage of the church (twelve gates on which were inscribed the names of the twelve tribes) with the apostolic preaching (twelve courses of foundation stones with the names of the twelve apostles). Christians have no need of a fixed location for their worship, however, because in this new city “the temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb.”

John 14:23-29. Continuing to read from the Last Supper discourse, we learn that our ability to live the new commandment will be supported by the Holy Spirit. Jesus' final gift to us is a peace that the world cannot give.
