THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER C Lectionary # 48

What does it take to show your love? The Gospels tell us that no one has any greater love than this—willingness to lay down life for a friend. Today's readings show disciples putting such love into practice in response to the witness of Jesus' love for them.

Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41. Early church preaching focused on Jesus' interpretation of Torah (“speaking in the name of Jesus”), on the self-sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, and, unfortunately, on accusations that the Jewish leadership was heavily involved in the death of Jesus (“You . . . want to bring this man's blood upon us”). Some of the leaders were probably involved in preparing evidence to turn over to Pilate, but we have to deal with the “blood guilt” accusation (“you had him killed by hanging him on a tree”) that led to centuries of anti-Judaism and terrible persecutions. Such accusations stemmed from Christian bitterness after Christians were expelled from some of the synagogues as heretics, but they led to condemnation of a whole ethnic group for the actions of a few people. They also led to the Holocaust.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (29) 30

This is the thanksgiving song of an individual freed from a deadly illness. Being brought back from the “netherworld” is applied, in this season, to Jesus' resurrection.

Let All the Earth Cry Out with Joy

Revelation 5:11-14. In this vision of heavenly worship, John quotes part of a hymn (“Worthy is the Lamb”) and a doxology (“To the one who sits on the throne”) that may have been part of worship in early Johannine communities. Having their own sung worship quoted as part of heavenly worship would help these communities understand their link with the reign of God.

John 21:1-19. In this post-resurrection appearance, Jesus performs a familiar miracle, which leads Peter to recognize him. He also shows that he is not a ghost by, presumably, eating some of the fish that he has prepared for breakfast. Finally, he questions Simon Peter's love, echoing the three times Peter denied Jesus in the courtyard of the high priest (John 18:17 , 25-27). Because of his love for Jesus, Peter will also suffer death.
