Echoes of the Christmas season appear in the first reading, and we read the beginning of John's “book of signs”: Where do we find God's love and mercy incarnate in our life and in our history?

Isaiah 62:1-5. The promises made by a prophet to a people struggling to rebuild their homeland and their ruined Temple are either outrageous nationalism or a deep insight into the nature of God and God's union with the people, a union as close as the marriage bond. This reading was used at the Vigil Mass on December 24.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (95) 96 . This enthronement psalm has a strong missionary character, calling on God's people to proclaim the divine Name through all the nations.

John 2:1-11. The beginning of John's “book of signs”: the wedding at Cana . Key to the story are Mary's total trust in her Son, Jesus' command over nature itself expressed in his ability to transform water into wine, and the creation of a wine so strikingly good that it suggests the bounty of the reign of God.
