SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER/DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY C Lectionary #45

Beginning on this Sunday, the second reading for each Sunday of the Easter Season is taken from Revelation. Preachers may want to pay some attention to this set of readings, especially because of the way Revelation is misinterpreted in our days as a book that gives clues to the end of the world. Musicians may want to attend to it by planning to use music that has an eschatological tone, and even to use some selections that incorporate the hymn texts found in Revelation, esp. Rev. 19:1-7, which is used at evening prayer.

Though this Sunday bears the additional title “Divine Mercy,” the devotion to the Divine Mercy should not be incorporated into Mass, nor should the readings and other texts for the Octave/Second Sunday of Easter be replaced, nor should the image of the Divine Mercy be displayed in the sanctuary during Mass. Because the devotion is not required of the faithful, no one should be forced to take part in it who may not want to. The service might take place, however, at a time apart from the regular Mass schedule.

This day in 2007 is also Yom HaShoah—the commemoration of the Holocaust. See the next set of suggestions for ideas about observing this remembrance.

Acts 5:12-16. Each year, in the first readings of the Easter Season, we hit the highlights of Luke's account of life in the early church. Here, the text describes the unique role of Peter and the awe in which he was held, even by non-believers.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (117) 118

As noted for Easter Sunday, this individual song of thanksgiving becomes for us Jesus' own celebration of the resurrection and our assurance that the "rejected stone" of the crucified Christ has become the "cornerstone" of our faith.

Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19. The introduction to the final book of the Christian Bible places John in exile on the island of Patmos , where he has a vision on a Sunday. The imagery is drawn from various apocalyptic books of the Hebrew Bible. Jesus appears as the Christ in a cosmic role, holding the keys of death and invoking the role of the Creator as the “first and the last, the one who lives.”

John 20:19-31. In John the resurrection appearance to the disciples happens on Easter Sunday evening, when Christ appears bringing a gift that the Bible says comes directly from God: peace, shalom. Not only does he bring this gift, Christ shares with the disciples the divine Spirit, through whom sins are forgiven. One week later, when Thomas has joined the group, Jesus points out the key role of faith, especially for all who were not eyewitnesses to the events of his death and resurrection.
