TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C Lectionary #135

What is our relationship to those in authority? What is a Christian perspective on secular authority, especially the authority to govern?

Intercessions

Today's second reading encourages that “supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone,” and especially “for kings and for all in authority.” The Church's tradition of prayer for the whole world is carried on in the general intercessions. Today's liturgy presents liturgy planners and pastoral musicians an opportunity to reflect on the importance of these general intercessions. The intercessions are arranged in a litany style, suggesting at least a sung response. If your community does not regularly sing the response to the general intercessions, you might begin today. Choose one response that you can pray today and for the remaining weeks of Ordinary Time.

Amos 8:4-7. The prophet says that those who abuse authority and “trample upon the needy” will suffer God's punishment, because God will not forget “a thing they have done.”

Psalm of the Day: Ps (112) 113. A hymn that connects God's exaltation with God's power to exalt the poor “to seat them with princes.”

1 Timothy 2:1–8: See the suggestions and questions given above about this reading. The focus in this section is God's intent to save everyone. Christians live in the world in a way that reflects this hope.

Luke 16:1–13. You may not believe it when you read this text, but Luke's focus in this section (16:1–31) is on care of the poor and sharing with the needy. The meaning of the story of the “unjust steward” (1–8) has been debated for centuries. Jesus is not praising the steward's unjust manipulation of his master's contracts, but he may be praising the steward's decisive action in a crisis. The story is linked to a saying about the way Christians don't seem to “get it” in terms of kingdom behavior—they are less prudent as “children of light” than people who aren't believers. One form of kingdom prudence is using this world's goods by sharing them with others, especially the poor.
