Humility is not the same as groveling. Humility means knowing your strengths and your weaknesses and acknowledging that you may know some things but not everything. There is, after all, just one messiah, and, under our own power, anyway, we ain't it.

Sirach 3:17–18, 20, 28–29. A lot of Wisdom literature includes this kind of practical advice on how to get along in the world.

Hebrews 12:18–19, 22–24a. The author uses images of God's presence to teach believers about the proper approach to God in prayer. They are not approaching the God of thunder and lightning on Mount Sinai ; they are approaching the God of the Jerusalem Temple , but they are approaching this God as Father, for they are coming through “Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant.”

Luke 14:1, 7–14. Can you imagine talking like this to someone who invites you to supper? But, it seems, Jesus never lost an opportunity to teach the kind of practical advice that makes the reign of God a reality here and now.
