TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C Lectionary #120
The things that really matter are often the center of debate and even of family division. How seriously do we take our faith? What would we give up to defend it? As the old question goes: If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

Jeremiah 38:4–6, 8–10. Prophets, especially those who were close to the court in Jerusalem, were expected to bring good news and not challenge the authorities. At a time when Jerusalem was under siege, Jeremiah refused to do that, and he suffered accordingly.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (39) 40. This psalm begins as a hymn but turns into a lament. Most of the lament portion is excised from today’s responsorial psalm. The imagery of the first few verses corresponds well with the description of Jeremiah’s plight.

Suggested Common Psalm
Ps 25, To You, O Lord, I Lift My Soul

Hebrews 12:1-4. Witnesses to fidelity despite opposition and challenge (Hebrews 11) bring us to turn our eyes to the greatest witness to faith even in the face of death: Jesus.

Luke 12:49-53. Staying faithful comes at a cost. It may lead to division, even among people who are close to one another. But is the challenge to face and accept just this fact of division, or is it to stay faithful until fidelity brings reunion and peace?
