FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT C Lectionary #3
The readings present three ways of looking at the future. There are those who look to the future as a time of promise (first reading and Gospel). There are those who believe that worrying about the future or the past is useless; what counts is the way you live day by day (psalm and second reading). And there are those who take a more paranoid approach to life: Fear the future (Gospel).
Jeremiah 33:14-16. The prophet speaks to the people in exile, promising them a future of peace and justice built around the hope for a restored Davidic monarchy in a restored Jerusalem .
Psalm of the Day: Ps (24) 25 . This psalm is really an individual lament, though the lamenting sections are excised from the verses used today. The psalm is edited to focus on the “way” that the Lord teaches, especially through the Torah: the way that leads to truth and justice.

1 Thessalonians 3:12–4:2. Paul's practical advice to a community concerned about when the Lord Jesus will return: Keep on living the way I taught you.
Luke 21:25-28, 34-36. This “apocalyptic” sermon uses some common expectations of the time—a kind of cosmic warfare that echoes in the heavens the war between good and evil for human souls—to console believers because “your redemption is at hand.” In order to be prepared for that redemption, however, they need to live in vigilance and prayer.
