SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C Lectionary #111
The Lord's Prayer. In today's Gospel Jesus teaches the disciples how they are to pray. They are to pray to God as a child calls to a parent, and they are to ask for what they really need, boldly and persistently. Above all, they are to pray for the coming of God's reign and the fulfillment of God's will.

The pattern for this kind of prayer is the Lord's Prayer or the Our Father. From a very early period this prayer has been sung or spoken by communities of Christians after the Eucharistic Prayer and before Communion. The petition for daily bread was widely interpreted by early Christians to refer to the Eucharist, and the prayer for forgiveness reflected the wish for mutual reconciliation that ought to characterize a community that not only receives the Body of Christ but is the Body of Christ.

Singing the Lord's Prayer emphasizes its importance in the Communion Rite. Be sure to sing the doxology ("For the kingdom," etc.) as well, even if the priest does not sing the intervening prayer, known as the embolism. The chant version, sung without accompaniment, is perhaps the best choice.

Genesis 18:20–32. Abraham offers an example of persistent prayer. The sad thing, of course, is that God could not find even ten just people in Sodom .

Psalm of the Day: Ps (137) 138
This individual psalm of thanksgiving praises God for hearing the psalmist's prayer and responding to it.
