TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Lectionary #96

The scandal of innocent suffering finds its central symbol in the scandal of the cross: An innocent person dies for the guilty; a person without sin dies for sinners.

Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1. The prophet is struggling with the meaning of the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile to Babylon (587 bce), but he sees a restoration of the nation and its capital, but at the cost of suffering by a figure similar to the Suffering Servant in the Book of Isaiah.

Psalm of the Day: Ps. 63 (62)
Psalm 63 may be a song written in exile. The poet longs for the Jerusalem Temple, source of God’s blessings. But even without sight of the sanctuary, the poet will continue to pray and to shout for joy “in the shadow of [God’s] wings.”

Galatians 3:26-29. Life in Christ changes everything, even the way we look at and understand one another.

Luke 9:18-24. Jesus rejects identification as the messiah (“the Christ of God”) because that title carried with it images of military conquest. Rather, he uses his preferred self-description—“the Son of Man”—to point to his coming self-sacrifice. He warns his followers that the same self-sacrifice will be expected of them: They must give themselves to the will of God, whatever that may require.
