The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart is a celebration of divine love expressed in the incarnate person of Jesus. That divine love in human form is a call to each of us to be touched and transformed by this love. Devotion to the Sacred Heat developed in the middle ages and became so strong that it evoked several papal encyclicals in support and explanation of this devotion. Beginning as a special devotion in a French seminary, a liturgical celebration of the Sacred Heart spread in the eighteenth century through France and other European nations, and it became a feast in the universal calendar in 1856.

Hosea 11:1, 3–4, 8c–9. Through the voice of the prophet, God recalls the divine love showered on Israel. Despite the people’s unfaithfulness, God promises not to let divine anger rage because God’s “heart is overwhelmed” at the people’s suffering.

Psalm of the Day: Isaiah 12:2–3, 4, 5–6
This canticle concludes the first section of the Book of Isaiah with a song of thanksgiving. It promises that a time of salvation is at hand.

Ephesians 3:8–12, 14–19. Paul links the eternal plan of redemption to the presence of Christ in individual believers so that they may “know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge” and be “filled with all the fullness of God.”

John 19:31–37. Part of John’s passion narrative—a soldier pierces Jesus’ heart with a lance. Christian tradition has interpreted the “blood and water” that flowed out as symbols of the two great sacraments of Eucharist and baptism.
