Parish Funerals and Today's Celebration
Preparing for today's liturgy presents pastoral musicians with the opportunity to take stock of music at parish funerals: the involvement of the family in the selection of music; the participation of parish cantors, choirs, and instrumentalists in the celebration of the funeral liturgy; and the variety of musical selections that are both appropriate to the funeral rites and familiar to our worshiping communities.
The celebration of All Souls also gives music planners a chance to place on the lips of the Sunday assembly good musical selections that can be used at funeral liturgies. The wise pastoral musician may want to select some music for today's liturgy that is tried and true, along with some less familiar music that may become part of the community's funeral repertoire in the future.
The readings are chosen from the readings for Masses for the Dead. The Lectionary for Mass offers a selection of these readings at #668.
Suggested Responsorial Psalm: Ps (26) 27
The Lectionary provides a rich variety of responsorial psalms, many of which are very familiar to worshipping communities. Psalm 27, with its spirit of confident hope combined with a lament, makes it a fitting choice for the fall season and the last weeks of Ordinary Time.
