SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT B Lectionary #5
This could be considered John the Baptist Sunday. The image of the Baptist is presented each Advent as one of two models for faithful Christians to imitate. (The other major Advent model is Mary, Mother of the Lord.)
Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11. The return of the exiles is such a powerful event that people feel as if the desert itself prepares a smooth path for them to walk. From the perspective of a ruined Jerusalem and Judah, it is as if God is physically returning to the land with the exiles.
Psalm of the Day: Ps (84) 85
Remembering God's past mercies, the psalmist calls on God to forgive and be merciful now, in the present.

2 Peter 3:8-14. The author of this baptismal reflection tells people who are wondering when Christ's promise to return will come true not to worry: God's time is not like ours, but Christ will not delay. What matters, therefore, is how you are living now.
Mark 1:1-8. John was a kind of "seven-day wonder," drawing people out into the desert to see and hear this wild man. But John's message—like the Gospel which begins with that message—pointed beyond itself to the "one who is to come."
