TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Lectionary #131
How do you say who Jesus is? How does your life express your faith? God is faithful to us, but how do we express our fidelity to God?

Isaiah 50:5-9a. One of the “songs of the servant,” this poem describes the faithful Israelite (or perhaps the prophet) as one who has suffered for fidelity to God. Despite such suffering, the servant holds true to faith, knowing that the “Lord God is my help.”

Psalm of the Day: Ps (114-115) 116
This song of thanksgiving begins with a proclamation of God’s action on behalf of the psalmist, who felt as if he were close to death, and the psalmist’s vow to God in thanks for divine intervention. (Only the first part of the psalm is sung today, with just a brief reference to the vow.)

James 2:14-18. Often used as a counter-argument to Paul’s comment that we are justified by faith apart from works (Rom 3:28), in its original context this section of the Letter of James may, in fact, have been a criticism of Pauline teaching. Its point, however, is that faith must be expressed in daily behavior; it cannot be true faith if it’s not put into action.

Mark 8:27-35. Christology sometimes seems to be in the eye of the beholder. Who do you say Jesus is? Some of us consider him a divinely inspired teacher; others think of him as the divine judge; others see him as the crucified savior; others have different opinions. But the Church spent its first five centuries trying to pin down its shared belief about Jesus the Christ. At the Council of Chalcedon (451), the bishops accepted the formula that Jesus Christ is fully human and fully divine. We’re still exploring all the implications of that simple statement.
