TWENTY‑SECOND SUNDAY B Lectionary #125
“Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.” If the Gospel does not apply in our daily lives, it has no real claim to our fidelity.

Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8. This introduction to a summary of the Torah (the “Law” or “Way of Life” for Israel) explains its role in the lives of the Chosen People. The Torah is intended to bring life. It is a source of wisdom.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (14) 15
This psalm’s setting is at the gate of the Jerusalem Temple. It is a liturgical celebration of the Temple; it is also a didactic expression of what is required of someone who wants to offer authentic praise and sacrifice in the Temple.

Lord, You Have the Words of Everlasting Life

James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27. The author of this letter describes Christian believers as a focal point for the proper understanding of human existence: We are a kind of “firstfruits” whose responsibility is to express in our lives the faith that God is the source of all good things. We do this by living out the word we have received, especially in its charitable aspects and its call for justice: “Religion that is pure and undefiled . . . is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”

Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23. Jesus voices a common criticism of the time: Many people give lip-service to God’s word, but they do not live it “from the heart.” “The things that come out from within are what defile.” Our actions show whether or not we believe God’s word and are faithful to it.
