FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT B  Lectionary #23

The covenant between God and the people is made in water: Noah, Jesus, baptism. “The first Sunday of Lent marks the beginning of the annual Lenten observance. In the Mass of this Sunday there should be some distinctive elements which underline this important moment, e.g., the entrance procession with litanies of the saints” (Congregation for Divine Worship, Circular Letter Paschalis solemnitatis [1988], 26).

Rite of Election and Rite of Sending
The Rite of Election is celebrated today for those catechumens who will receive the sacraments of initiation at Easter. Some dioceses and parishes also celebrate the Call to Continuing Conversion for baptized candidates and/or the Rite of Sending.

Genesis 9:8-15. The covenant between God and Noah reaches beyond humanity to embrace all living beings.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (24) 25
This individual lament encloses the psalmist’s repentance over personal sins in an evocation of God’s mercy which is “from of old.”

1 Peter 3:18-22. Some commentators think that 1 Peter contains a baptismal homily or is based on a baptismal instruction. This excerpt unites three images: Christ going down to death (and to the realm of the dead) but coming to life in the Spirit; Noah saved through water; and baptism as an appeal to God “through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

Mark 1:12-15. After his baptism by John, Jesus is “driven” by the Spirit to a place of challenge and temptation—to the wilderness where Israel met God during the Exodus. The brief text ends with a summary of Jesus’ preaching: “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
