Appropriately, as we approach a new calendar year, we are called to watch, to be attentive for signs of God's presence. This Sunday is also about returning: our returning to God, but also God's return to us.
Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7. A cry from exile. No one remembers what God has done for the people in the past, not even, it seems to the prophet, God. Even so, "O Lord, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands."
Psalm of the Day: Ps (79) 80
A communal lament, calling on God as Israel's shepherd to return and care for the people.

Lord, Let Us See Your Kindness (see suggestions for 2nd Sunday of Advent)
1 Corinthians 1:3-9. At the beginning of this important letter, Paul gives thanks for the community's faith and prays that they will remain faithful "to the end . . . [to] the day of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Mark 13:33-37. This instruction to the disciples was very important to Mark's original audience (probably the Christian community in Rome). Facing persecution, they are reassured that the Lord will be returning, so they should keep faithful watch.
