NINETEENTH SUNDAY B Lectionary #116
On this “bread of life” Sunday, it might be good to focus on how we come to know Jesus and listen to the Father and learn from him. God’s nourishment comes to us in the “sacrament of the Word” as well as in the “sacrament of the meal/sacrifice.”

1 Kings 19:4-8. Nourished by God’s miraculous gift of food, Elijah is strengthened to continue God’s work.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (33) 34
Psalm 34 is the traditional Communion song, first used that way early in the Church’s Eucharistic history. It was originally an individual thanksgiving addressed to the God whose eyes “are on the righteous and his ears open to their cry.” One of the following settings may be used as the common psalm for this and the following two Sundays.

Ephesians 4:30–5:2. Christian life is not a matter of following set behaviors or a moral code; it is rather a matter of living in imitation of God. God’s generosity exceeds all limits and restrictions as shown in Christ, who “loved us and handed himself over for us.”

John 6:41-51. Just who is this “Jesus, the son of Joseph”? Is it enough to know his parents if we expect to know him? Or is there something in him that draws us to God and invites us to hear and understand the divine Word? To experience God’s Word in this incarnate form is truly to be nourished with the bread of life.
