EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY B Lectionary #113

Everybody complains about the food and about not getting enough of the good stuff, whether they’re in the desert with Moses or on the seashore with Jesus. Instead of complaining, we should think about where the bread comes from and give thanks to the giver of all good gifts.

Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15. God provides bread and meat for the grumbling Israelites so that they will not return to the “fleshpots” of Egypt but will fulfill the divine plan.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (77) 78
This very long song, from which we sing a few excerpts today, recounts highlights of Israel’s history from the Exodus to the early years of the monarchy, showing God’s goodness and the repeated failure of the people to “get it”: “In spite of all this they still sinned; they did not believe in God’s wonders” (78:32).

Suggested Common Psalm: Ps (33) 34
Taste and See the Goodness of the Lord (see next Sunday)

Ephesians 4:17, 20-24. As noted several times in Ephesians, Christian belief must be expressed in practice. Conversion means changing how you behave as well as how you believe.

John 6:24-35. The first part of John’s commentary on the feeding of the five thousand: Jesus invites the people to “look beyond the bread you eat” and see the divine action and the arrival of the kingdom of God. Jesus identifies himself as the bread of life.
