NOTE ON SUNDAYS SEVENTEEN THROUGH TWENTY-ONE
The Gospel texts for the next five Sundays are taken from John 6—the feeding of the five thousand and the “bread of life” sermons, unless the Feast of the Transfiguration replaces one of the Sundays. The appearance of these texts in the B Cycle offers us an opportunity for an extended reflection on the meaning and structure of the Order of Mass. Parishes might want to take this time to provide a homiletic reflection on the Mass itself rather than on the specific texts. Topics might include: the connection between Mass and the Lord’s Day; the liturgy of the Word; the Eucharistic Prayer as our offering and transformation “in Christ”; the Communion rites—Lord’s Prayer, sign of peace, breaking of bread, Communion procession; the connection between Mass and the rest of Christian life, especially its service aspects; and the gestures that involve us in “full, conscious, and active participation”—especially singing.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY B Lectionary #110
God certainly seems to enjoy lavish meals. They are among the actions performed by the prophets; they are Jesus’ favorite events for teaching and transformation; they are signs of the presence of the kingdom.

2 Kings 4:42-44. This feeding miracle by Elisha may be the source for some details in John’s version of the feeding of the five thousand. Note the use of barley bread in both accounts, the objection voiced by Elisha’s servant and by Philip, and the remainder of the food left over as a sign of divine abundance.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (144) 145
A hymn praising God’s goodness as reflected especially in the divine reign (vv. 11–13). Psalm 145, with the antiphon “I Will Praise Your Name” may also be used as a seasonal psalm; it would be appropriate to connect this Sunday with the following four Sundays by using this psalm. Another appropriate psalm to connect the “bread of life” Sundays is Psalm 34 (see the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time).

Ephesians 4:1-6. Our incorporation into the unity that is Christ has practical consequences. Because we are one in faith and in baptism, we must live “in a manner worthy of the call [we] have received.”

John 6:1-15. John’s account of the feeding of the five thousand is set near the feast of Passover. The people interpret the miracle as a prophetic sign of the end-time. The rest of this chapter is where one find’s John’s Eucharistic theology.
