SACRED HEART OF JESUS A Lectionary #170
The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is a celebration of divine love expressed in the incarnate person of Jesus. That divine love in human form is a call to each of us to be touched and transformed by this love. Devotion to the Sacred Heat developed in the middle ages and became so strong that it evoked several papal encyclicals in support and explanation of this devotion. Beginning as a special devotion in a French seminary, a liturgical celebration of the Sacred Heart spread in the eighteenth century through France and other European nations, and it became a feast in the universal calendar in 1856.

Deuteronomy 7:6–11. With echoes of language from Exodus, this text encourages recognition of Israel’s uniqueness which has come only as a result of God’s grace.

Psalm of the Day: Ps. (102) 103
This is an individual thanksgiving, perhaps giving thanks for recovery from illness. Thought of recovery from illness also evokes a thanksgiving for forgiveness from sin.

1 John 4:7–16. Love distinguishes the person who “knows God” from the one without this knowledge. God’s love was shown to us in the person and ministry of the Son. Because God has loved us, we must love one another.

Matthew 11:25–30. Through Christ, we are invited into the intimate life of the Godhead.
