VIGIL OF PENTECOST Lectionary #62

For music suggestions for the Vigil of Pentecost, including Psalm 104, see Solemnity of Pentecost.

The revised Roman Missal offers the option for the Pentecost Vigil Mass (i.e., any Mass on Saturday evening before or after Evening Prayer I of Pentecost Sunday) to echo the shape of the Paschal Vigil as an extended celebration of the Word. Alternatively, a parish or community celebrating this Mass (these Masses) as normal Sunday Masses—the “simple form,” according to the missal--should make a selection from the readings offered in the Lectionary for Mass. In either case, the sequence is not sung at the Saturday evening Masses. Although it is not permitted in the Lectionary for Mass, for pastoral reasons some parishes use the readings of Pentecost Sunday on Saturday evening. If that is done, then the sequence, which is a part of those Sunday texts, should be sung on Saturday evening as well.

In order, the first four readings for the Vigil (or, in simple form, the four options for the first reading at Masses on Saturday afternoon/evening) tell the story of the confusion of languages at Babel (Genesis 11:1-9); the appearance of God to Moses at Sinai (Exodus 19:3-8, 16-20); Ezekiel's vision of the dry bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14); and Joel's vision of a whole community turned into prophets (Joel 3:1-5).

Romans 8:22-27. The Spirit, working in believers, helps us to become the voice of all creation “groaning” for God's reconciliation.

John 7:37-39. In this passage John links baptism with the gift of the Spirit.

SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST Lectionary #63A
Since this is the final feast of the Great Fifty Days, how does Pentecost complete Easter?

Music Suggestions

Acts 2:1-11. The Spirit fills the disciples and sends them out to preach to the whole world. God’s Spirit, like God's love (see the commentary on the second reading for the Seventh Sunday of Easter) is missionary; it impels us beyond ourselves and our own concerns.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (103) 104
A hymn of praise to the Creator who sustains the whole of creation especially through the gift of water (verses 10-18 and 27-35). See the commentary on the water imagery used at the Easter Vigil.

Sequence
The “Veni, Sancte Spiritus” is sung before the Gospel Alleluia as a required part of the Pentecost celebration. Though it is a musical rite that requires no action, it may be used to accompany a procession with the Gospel Book (and incense) that moves through the congregation to the place where the Word will be proclaimed, if the space permits such movement.

John 20:19-23. John’s version of the gift of the Holy Spirit sets that giving on Easter Sunday evening. The disciples, gifted with the Spirit, are encouraged to assume a divine power by showing mercy and forgiving sins, because if they don't, then people's sins will be “held bound.”
