FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER A, Lectionary #52

How do we deal with divisions in the community? Why is it important, in light of our Easter faith, to overcome such divisions?

Acts 6:1-7. The deacons were chosen from among Greek-speaking converts to care for the needs of widows and others in the Greek-speaking section of the Christian community in Jerusalem because those people were being ignored by the majority, who were Hebrew-speaking.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (32) 33
This hymn praises God as creator, sovereign over the nations, and savior of Israel. It is God who “preserves from famine,” and so the Church must become the “incarnation” of such divine care.

Suggested Common Psalm: Ps (99) 100
We Are His People

1 Peter 2:4-9. Many interpreters consider this part of 1 Peter to be an ancient baptismal homily. Certainly it offers rich images to interpret baptism as incorporation into the “living” building of the Church which has Christ for cornerstone and as incorporation into the priestly people whose prayer “in Christ” is heard by the Father.

John 14:1-12. For Christians there is one way to God—through Christ—but there are many “dwelling places.” Perhaps we need to think of Christ as a rainbow who reveals the pure light of the Father through a spectrum of colors.
