THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY A Lectionary #151
Judgments against those in authority: We are all subject to God's word.
Malachi 1:14b–2;2b, 8–10. The prophet, writing at a time when faithful observance of the Temple ritual was at a low ebb, before the reforms of Ezra and Nehemiah, condemns the priestly caste of Levites who have "turned aside from the way and have caused many to falter by [their] instruction." Positions of authority among believers are no guarantee that we will not "break faith with one another, violating the covenant of our fathers."
Psalm of the Day: Ps (130) 131
A beautiful psalm of trust. The psalmist pictures the believer as a child who
has been fed, resting on a mother's lap.

If Today You Hear His Voice
1 Thessalonians 2:7b–9, 13. Paul reminds the Thessalonians how hard he
worked among them, and he invites them to stop quarreling (a point omitted from
today's text) but to accept the good news as the word of God.
Matthew 23:1–12. Jesus condemns the "scribes and Pharisees," who were lay leaders of the major "block" of Jews at his time, for not being faithful to their interpretation of the Torah. Their interpretation is generally accurate, Jesus suggests (since he agrees in large part in his teaching with the teaching of the other Pharisees), but they do not practice what they preach. If you are going to be a teacher, Jesus says, be humble and avoid titles of honor.
