TWENTY‑EIGHTH SUNDAY A Lectionary #142
The kingdom of heaven is like a great feast, but be sure that you respond when invited!
Isaiah 25:6–10a. The prophet sees Jerusalem transformed into a banquet hall where God not only provides food for the whole world but also takes away all that deprives us of enjoyment, symbolized by the "veil of death" that "veils all peoples."
Psalm of the Day: Ps (22) 23
A song of deep trust, this is not only the most familiar of the psalms, it is probably the most easily recognized text of the Bible.

The Lord Is My Shepherd
Philippians 4:12–14, 19–20. Looking back at his life, Paul finds that, no matter what the circumstances, God was always with him. In that faith, he prays that God will "fully supply" the needs of the Philippians, who have sent help to Paul. The "fullness" of that prayer is an echo of the messianic fullness alluded to in today's other readings.
Matthew 22:1–14. Jesus puts an interesting twist on the familiar image of the messianic banquet. In this parable, those who have been invited to the royal feast spurn the king's invitation (an absolute insult to royal hospitality) and so suffer the consequences. Nothing surprising in this, but what follows is new: the invitation to the feast extended to anyone lingering in the street. The final saying about the man without a wedding garment may have been added to the original story, since it doesn't quite fit the generous tone of the earlier invitation. On the other hand, it may be another reference to the practice of hospitality: If you accept an invitation, you do what you can to make yourself acceptable under the circumstances.
