Isaiah 5:1–7. The prophet sings about his “friend's” care for a chosen vineyard. But the vineyard has produced inedible fruit. What’s left to do? Start again. When God looked for just behavior, all that could be seen was “bloodshed” and “the outcry.”

Psalm of the Day: Ps (79) 80

Enemies have broken into God's vineyard, the one transplanted from Egypt with such care. The psalmist calls on God to pay attention to what's going on, and to tend the vineyard God has planted.

Philippians 4:6–9. No vineyard in this reading, but there is a call to pay attention to the way we live by focusing on whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious, excellent, and worthy of praise. Put into practice “what you have learned and received and heard and seen” if you want God to be with you.

Matthew 21:33–43. This time the vineyard is the setting for the misbehavior of the owner's tenants, who seize and kill the owner's servants and, finally, his son. “What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?” What is the harvest that the owner is expecting from us, tenants in the vineyard?
