TWENTY‑SIXTH SUNDAY A  Lectionary #136
Which one did the Father's will?

Ezekiel 18:25–28. The prophet teaches that those who are faithful must remain faithful, while there is always a chance for those who have been faithless to change their ways. God welcomes such a change.

Psalm of the Day:  Ps (24) 25
A lament from someone who realizes that his or her life has been marked by sin. It calls on God to remember merciful behavior so that the sinner may find mercy now.

Suggested Common Psalm:  Ps (24) 25

To You, O Lord, I Lift My Soul

Philippians 2:1–11. After calling on the community to live in unity, Paul invokes the example of Christ who was willing to humble himself completely for the sake of his sisters and brothers. Like Christ, Paul suggests, we too may find ourselves rewarded if we are willing to put the needs of others above our own needs.

Matthew 21:28–32. The parable of the two sons is used to teach Jesus' opponents why he consorts with sinners. There is a chance that they may hear God's invitation and change their behavior, but if there is no one to tell them what God wants, they will never change. John the Baptist told them, but he was criticized by those who thought of themselves as faithful, although they missed the call to practice mercy.
