At our hearts, Jews and Christians are like two families that share one covenant. The readings on this Sunday explore Christian rootedness in God’s eternally valid covenant with Israel.

Exodus 19:2-6. This is the core of God's covenant with Israel: “If you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people.” This covenant remains valid, as the Church has taught consistently since Vatican II. The followers of Jesus are, to use an image from Paul, like a wild shoot grafted onto the tree of the covenant. How, then, do we treat and pray for Jewish people?

Romans 5:6–11. We were “ungodly” because we were not Jews and not members of the covenant when Christ died for us. By being grafted into the covenant people through Christ, we are no longer God's “enemies” but people who are reconciled to God.

Matthew  9:36–10:8. Jesus summons twelve of his followers (a number symbolic of Israel's twelve tribes) to go out as missionaries to the Jews to announce the reign of God. Note that he tells them explicitly not to go into “pagan territory” or to “a Samaritan town” but to go to the “lost sheep of the house of Israel,” i.e., only to other Jews. The invitation to the nations will not be extended until after Jesus’ death and resurrection.
