TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A  Lectionary #88

You find fidelity to God in some strange places.

Hosea 6:3-6. The prophet condemns any observance of the Torah that is not rooted in fidelity to God. Lip-service is not sufficient; it is like “a morning cloud, like the dew that passes early away.” This is equally true, of course, of those who declare faith in Jesus Christ without actually living faithfully.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (49) 50
This psalm may originally have been part of a covenant-renewal liturgy, in which God testifies before Israel about what the covenant really means. It does not mean offering sacrifice; it means offering faithful praise to God and fidelity to the terms of the covenant.

Romans 4:18-25. Abraham and Sarah are offered as two examples of people who kept faith even when their experience suggested that they shouldn’t. They “hoped against hope,” and they “did not doubt God’s promise in unbelief.”

Matthew 9:9-13. Jesus had a habit of eating with tax collectors and people who broke the Law. As he explains that practice here, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.” What does this suggest about the church’s “preferential option for the poor?”
