to assist with the cost of educational formation for pastoral musicians

NPM also donates $500 toward the $1,000 Rensselaer Challenge Grant administered by the Rensselaer Program of Church Music and Liturgy at Saint Joseph College, Rensselaer, Indiana.


Eligibility Requirements
  • NPM membership
  • Part-time or full-time enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program of studies related to the field of pastoral music during the 2010-2011 school year
  • Scholarship funds may be applied only to registration, tuition, fees, or books
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Applicant should intend to work at least two years in the field of pastoral music following graduation/program completion

Scholarships are awarded for one year only; a former recipient may re-apply but should not assume that renewal is automatic


Application Deadline & Procedure

Deadline: Application must be postmarked by March 5, 2010
Applicants can expect to receive notice about the committee’s decision by June 1, 2010. The scholarship recipients should expect to receive their checks in person during the NPM national convention (July 12 - 16) or via mail by August 31, 2010.


How to Apply

Submit the following four (4) items:

  1. A letter or short essay containing the following information:
    a) Name & contact information: address, home & work phone, e-mail, and NPM membership number (found above your name on magazine mailing label)
    b) A brief essay explaining your definition of the term "pastoral musician"
    c) Description of your talents
    d) Your previous experience as pastoral musician
    e) Your educational background
    f) Educational program where you will be/are enrolled. (please include: name of college/university, degree pursued or continuing education program, full or part-time status and major and/or minor fields of study)
  2. Three copies of a recording (CD format) that demonstrates your solo performance skills or those of an ensemble under your direction. The recording should be approximately 5 minutes in length. The CD must identify the piece or pieces on the recording and the performer(s).
  3. Two (2) letters of recommendation, including one written by your pastor.
  4. Completed Financial Need Statement (pdf file).
