Metro

Metrorail
:
www.wmata.com, 202-637-7000
The Washington, DC, Metrorail system is a fast and easy way to get around the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.

To find fares and travel times between stations go to http://www.wmata.com/rail/stations.cfm and click on the station where you're starting your trip.

A paper Farecard or SmarTrip Card pre-loaded with sufficient money to cover the cost of your trip is required for travel on the extensive Metrorail system.  One or the other must be used both to enter and to exit the system.  Vending machines/dispensers are located at all entrances to Metrorail station and sell both Farecards and SmarTrip cards.  SmarTrip Cards cost $10 ($5 for the card itself and $5 in fare value, which can be added to later).   You can also purchase SmarTrip cards in advance and receive them by mail at http://www.wmata.com/fares/purchase/store/

Metrorail fares vary based on the time of day and day of the week.  At any time, if you use a paper Farecard you will pay a surcharge for the trip.  The surcharge is $1 for each trip taken with a standard paper Farecard. (That's $2 for a roundtrip.)  The surcharge is 50¢ per trip for seniors and people with disabilities.  (That’s $1 roundtrip.)  If you only plan to use Metrorail to travel from the airport to hotel and then from the hotel to airport at the end of the week, the paper Farecard may be your best option.  If you will use Metrorail for even one more trip during the week, the SmarTrip Card will probably save you money.

To find fares and travel times between stations go to http://www.wmata.com/rail/stations.cfm and click on the station where you're starting your trip.

Metrorail stations have a station manager on duty whenever the station is open.  They are good resources if you need help trying to use the vending machines or are confused about the platform from which you should board a Metrorail train.
