Last weekend the Board of Directors offered this public statement against racism. We recognize that this statement did not adequately address the current reality. As in all things, the need to be specific is important. Let us be clear – we unequivocally believe that Black Lives Matter.
As the statement says, we also commit to members that, as the NPM 2.0 process continues to clarify an exciting vision for the future of our association, greater inclusivity among both members and leaders is imperative. As a result, we are making changes to our virtual convention to reflect these times and will be announcing and offering, in the very near future, other initiatives and opportunities to members and non-members to become better listeners, learners, and people of action.

The National Association of Pastoral Musicians stands with the U.S. Catholic Bishops as one of the “many voices speaking out and seeking healing against the evil of racism in our land.” The bishops continue to remind us: “People of good conscience must never turn a blind eye when citizens are being deprived of their human dignity and even their lives. Indifference is not an option.”
As pastoral musicians it is our mission and responsibility to lead our faith communities in musical worship, inspiring Christians to embrace the mandate of Jesus to move beyond such indifference in word AND in deed.
We are inspired by our episcopal moderator, Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso, in his prophetic advocacy for the dignity of human life, who writes: “Every race and color and tribe and people and language and culture are threads in the vibrant and diverse tapestry of the Reign of God.” As an association, we are committed to more inclusivity in our national leadership and to the increased diversity of our membership as essential to our future.
Led by the Holy Spirit, we shall overcome the current tumult in our nation. As pastoral musicians we will not fail to proclaim the Gospel of life and we will continue to lead God’s people in sung prayer for healing in our land.
